The Peix de Roca gastronomic campaign in Begur
Delicious fresh fish and seafood are one of Costa Brava’s biggest draws when it comes to its gastronomic offerings. It’s especially easy to enjoy if you happen to be visiting the coast in late spring.
From April to June, guests to Costa Brava can sample many varieties of rock fish in restaurants in Begur and its vicinity as part of the unique gastronomic campaign Peix de Roca (“Rock Fish”).
What is Costa Brava rock fish, or peix de roca?
Technically, “rock fish” is not a scientific classification, but a commonly accepted local way to distinguish the fish that prefer rocky, dark crevices of underwater rocks and canyons to the light and cheery sandy seabed.
Costa Brava rockfish are bonier, with bigger heads and firmer, more flavourful flesh that makes for a versatile, desirable ingredient appreciated by restaurant chefs. In Costa Brava, rockfish is a celebrated ingredient in soups, stock, and rice dishes.
Peix de Roca Begur 2026
While it’s certainly possible to enjoy rockfish in the Costa Brava other times of the year, May is traditionally the best month to do so—the Peix de Roca gastronomic campaign is when the most iconic local restaurants in Begur offer special prix fixe menus focused on rockfish, adding red sea bream, grouper, and flounder to dishes from seasonal soups and paellas to tartars and pastries.
In 2026, the Peix de Roca gastronomic campaign runs from April 25 to June 7, 2026.
