The main attraction of any sea resort is, without a doubt, its beach, and the many towns along the Costa Brava coast are no exception. While all of them have historical monuments and architectural masterpieces, there are not nearly enough to fill a whole day of discovery on foot. To satisfy your cultural curiosity fully, a trip to the big city is needed!
Barcelona is the one that comes to mind, but even a light introduction to this bustling city rich in culture and history requires five to seven days. On the other hand, Girona, the administrative capital of the namesake province, is the perfect choice for a day trip or a weekend jaunt. It's got plenty to show for the two thousand years of its existence yet it remains a calm, cozy and picturesque place that places no pressure on its visitors to discover all at once.
Girona lies about 40 km away from the sea and the popular town resorts of the Costa Brava; the roundtrip drive takes only an hour and a half to two hours. The main sights and attractions of Girona are located close to each other and can be discovered in one day if you don't linger in museums for too long.
One notable exception is the first two weeks of May when Girona hosts the annual flower festival Girona Temps de Flors. During this time, do linger in this beautiful ancient city! The water in the Mediterranean is still too chilly for swimming, after all.
