The funeral of the Sardine

The funeral of the Sardine
March 5, Platja d'Aro

Carnival always ends on Ash Wednesday, and its culminating event in Spain remains unchanged throughout the country, ending in the humorous Sardine Funeral.

In Platja d’Aro, the mourning procession gathers at a central square and unhurriedly takes the “casket” to the nearby RV parking spot where a big bonfire may be safely started. After the reading of a “will”, the “casket” is burned and all participants may grill real sardines on the fire.
